Mini bus test drives to commence Monday

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is working to commence test runs of the mini bus service in the city next Monday.

The test drives will last for two weeks and customers will be able to travel free of charge during that time. The fare within the city is set at MVR 7.

Children under the age of three and people over the age of 65 can travel free of charge on presentation of their ID cards. People with special needs who have National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) cards will also be able to travel free of charge on the bus. In addition, school students in uniforms will not be charged for their trips.

MTCC has brought in 41 buses to launch the mini bus service in Maldives, of which, 18 buses will be used in the Male'.

Initiation of bus services were delayed to address parking problems on the scheduled routes. As such, parking is now prohibited on Majeedhee Magu. The parking problem at Ameenee Magu and Orchid Magu is currently being resolved.

The bus service is divided into three routes. Buses will stop at eight areas on the Sosan route, while Ameenee route and Orchid route, will have 18 bus stops.

Buses will run every 10 minutes from different parts of Male'.

The RTL mini buses have a capacity of 16 passengers. The buses come equipped with handhelds which can accomodate 10 people. In addition, some RTL buses have wheelchair access, according to the company.
