President asks for foreign assistance to investigate attack on Nasheed

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih revealed that he has asked for foreign assistance to investigate the attack on Former President and Majilis Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

Addressing the nation via television around 0240hrs on Friday, the President said that a team from Australian Federal Police will be reaching Maldives on Saturday. He added that he had informed the relevant authorities to throughly investigate in order to bring perpetrators to justice.

President referred to attack made on Mohamed Nasheed as "an attack on democracy and the Maldivian economy."

He condemned the attack and went on to say that such violence will not be tolerated on Maldivian soil.

Following the attack outside Nasheed's residence around 2030hrs on Thursday, he was rushed to ADK hospital for treatment.

President had said the specialty team of doctors attending had informed him Nasheed would require further treatment.

In addition to Nasheed, four more people got injured in this attack; three bodyguards and one British man who was walking by at the time of the incident.
