Five more islands under curfew

Five more islands have a curfew announced in order to curb the spread of COVID-19 within the communities, Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced.

In an announcement signed by the Director General of Public Health Maimoonaa Aboobakuru, she declared an indefinite curfew in L. Naifaru, K. Maafushi, AA. Mathiveri, AA. Ukulhas, and B. Eydhafushi. This comes into affect starting from Friday onwards, the announcement said.

Restrictive measures for islands under curfew

- Vehicular use, and going out from 1600hrs to 0400hrs will be prohibited

- Parties, ceremonies and other large gatherings prohibited from being held

- Unless for an essential reason, movement from households have been prohibitted

- No more than three people allowed to meet un public

- Saloons and gyms to be closed

- All sports and exercise events to be halted

- Shops to ensure they are HPA compliant

- Services from cafes, restaurants and other food service providers to stop their services unless it is food delivery services

During curfew hours, several people are exempt from the restriction, HPA said. That includes police and army, health workers and the vehicles they use, ambulance, people with the task force pass, and people that require emergency medical health.

COVID-19 has been spreading in Maldives at an alarming rate, breaking 700 in daily positives since Wednesday. HPA has announced stricter measures for the Greater Male' Area as well, announcing that starting Friday, even private offices have to ensure their employees work from home unless absolutely essential.

So far 33,368 people have tested positive for COVID-19, while 78 people have died from it.
