President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced that starting from January next year, the salaries of all government employees will be increased by 40 percent.
During a campaign rally held in Thulhaadhoo as part of his presidential election tour across Baa Atoll, President Solih said that the approved budget for this year will bring about positive changes in the salaries of Police, Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), Customs, Immigration, and Corrections personnel.
In addition, the president said that salary increase will also extend to includes all Civil Service employees, Judicial staff, administrative staff of councils and religious scholars.
"Our aim is to bring about a positive change in the salaries of individuals employed across these sectors, starting from January next year, following the passing of this budget," President Solih said.
President Solih has announced that the salaries of all these employees will see a 40 percent increase. He provided some details regarding this change.
President Solih said that the salary of a constable-rank police officer will be raised from MVR 11,000 to MVR 15,400, and a private-rank officer currently receiving MVR 11,500 will see their salary increase to MVR 16,300 with this change.
Local Council Agency employees earning MVR 7,200 will observe their salary increase to MVR 10,500, President Solih said.
Currently, a Director at the civil services ministry receives MVR 16,000. However, President Solih has announced that this amount will be revised to MVR 23,200 starting from January next year.
A chief inspector, who currently receives MVR 34,400, will see their salary increase to MVR 48,000 after the implementation of pay harmonization.
"... This is not merely a casual statement. We have the calculations, schedules, and details," President Solih said.
" I feel that with this change, there will be a positive change in the lives of families. Every family will be self sufficient. We understand the challenges that couples with children face. How can someone who earns MVR 10,000 afford rent?"
President Solih said that pay harmonization would have a positive impact on the salaries of 44,280 employees working at various government agencies. He further said that such adjustments had not been undertaken by a government in ages.
Last year, the government increased the salaries of teacher followed by a pay raise for health workers in May 2023.
President Solih said that past administrations attempted to govern by maintaining control over the people and coercing them into labor, with no other considerations in mind.
