Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid on Friday, departed on an official visit to Brunei.
During his visit, Minister Shahid will have an audience with Brunei's Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Negara, Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah.
The Minister is also scheduled to meet second Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei, Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof, the Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, and Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jafaar.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were first established on March 31, 1984. Both countries are member states to the Commonwealth of Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Citing neglect during their long-standing diplomatic relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that no high-level officials have visited the country in 21 years.
The ministry is exploring possible avenues to provide more scholarship opportunities for Maldivians. A total of five Maldivian students are currently studying in Brunei.
Brunei donated USD 3 million for the construction of the Islamic Centre in capital city Male'.
The Maldives' delegation includes Minister Shahid, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Khaleel and Foreign Secretary Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed.
