Police have launched a criminal investigation into the disappearance of Thasleem Mohamed, who went missing during a trip to a sandbank near Kaafu atoll Huvafenfushi.

Police spokesperson Ahmed Shifan told Mihaaru News today that a criminal investigation has been launched due to suspicions of several serious aspects of the case.

"A large area has been covered in search for him," Shifan stated.

Reports indicate that Thasleem was part of a group of 15 people who visited the sandbank near Huvafenfushi. However, no official questioning of any individuals has been conducted yet.

The police said on Saturday afternoon that they had launched a search for 43-year-old Thasleem. Thasleem had been missing for 24 hours prior to the announcement.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) said that upon receiving the report of Thasleem's disappearance, they assisted the police by snorkeling an area of 5,000 square feet around the sandbank, while Coast Guard divers searched an additional 3,000 square feet.

The trip reportedly took place in a reclaimed area approximately 14 miles from Malé.

MNDF said that so far it has not been confirmed that the man went missing at sea, hence the search operation is being led by police.

Police said that those accompanying him on the picnic informed them that Thasleem was last seen between 10:00 hrs and 11:00 hrs on August 30.

Police have asked anyone with any information about Thasleem, or any persons who have since visited the sandbank, to contact Himmafushi Police Station on 9794639.

Thasleem is an employee working at the Malé City Council.
