Tourists to Maldives in May down by two percent

The number of tourists that visited the Maldives had a decrease of 2.3 percent for the month of May.

According to the official statistics of tourism ministry released Wednesday, tourist arrivals to the Maldives last month was 93,228, while the figure for the same month last year was 95,389.

Statistics show that the highest number of tourists in May hailed from China with 25,000, which is a decrease of 19 percent from last year. The second highest number of tourists arrived from Germany with 10,141, which is a decrease of two percent from last year. Meanwhile, the third highest number was from the UK with 7,253 marking an increase of five percent.

The total number of tourists to the Maldives this year until the end of May was 540,887, which is an annual increase of 2.5 percent.

According to the statistics, 117 resorts with 25,425 beds, 17 hotels with 1,741 beds, and 347 guesthouses with 5,095 beds had been in operation this year until end of May.

Resort occupancy had decreased by 67 percent last month, according to statistics. This is a yearly decrease of five percent. However, guesthouse occupancy had an increase of five percent in May.
