The Ministry of Economic Development, on Wednesday, reversed temporary regulations mandating foreign workers to seek special approvals to enter Maldives amid lockdown measures implemented over the COVID-19 outbreak.

The decision will be effective from July 15 onwards.

Implemented as per a directive issued by the ministry on March 21, all foreign workers employed in Maldives were required to secure an additional permit in order to gain entry to the country for essential reasons.

In order to attain the permits, which were issued via email, expatriates were to submit an application to the economic ministry at least 48 hours prior to arrival.

Maldives also reopened borders for international passengers on July 15, with the first batch of tourists arriving aboard a Qatar Airways flight which landed at Velana International Airport.
