Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer has promised the current administration will not back down from its pledges, and will go forward with the promise to increase employee remunerations in 2024.
The minister's statements came as response to Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) coalition candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Dr. Muizzu earlier pledged to increase the remunerations of officers in Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF). His promise was however, met with criticism with many claiming it impossible.
Responding to this, Dr. Muizzu later said that he was consulting his technical teams for the feasibility of his pledge, which he promised would be revised if necessary.
Minister Ameer had countered this, claiming the current administration was making realistic promises based actual research and data. He added that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate and current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's pledges of today would not be overturned tomorrow.
"Salaries of police and the MNDF, and all the government agencies will increase effectively from January next year," Ameer said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Muizzu on a Sangu TV interview explained his promise noting that the remuneration increment under his policy would fall into a three-phase effort; which would be divided to 2024, 2026, and 2028.
He further added that increment to the salaries was dependent on prospering economic activities, and noted that the public would not likely accept the pledges immediately even if it was shared based on expert advise.
"They do not believe it is feasible, so we are looking into it thoroughly. If there are revisions that we need to make after assessments, we will make them," Dr. Muizzu added.
