A resolution that was submitted to the Parliament on Monday called on the government to control the prices of goods and services to alleviate the burden on people.

The resolution, submitted by Raa atoll Maduvvaree MP Adam Shareef, said the prices of goods and services have increased by seven percent since January 2023.

Relative inflation rose by 75 percent last year, and food prices rose by 4.3 percent, MP Shareef's resolution said.

He said that the prices of various commodities have gone up in the run-up to this year’s Ramadan, which begins next Thursday. The opposition People's National Congress (PNC) member's resolution also said that the amount of fines and other payments that the citizens have to make to the government are increasing day by day.

Therefore, he called for a review of the GST, a reduction in the price of services provided by state-owned companies, and the implementation of price control measures.

"...In accordance with Article 167 of the parliament's regulations, I submit this resolution calling on the government to make arrangements to keep market prices at an affordable rate, especially during the holy month of Ramadan," the resolution said.

Since the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has a majority in parliament, resolutions from the opposition rarely pass.
