The British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and Ambassador to Maldives, James Dauris, recognized the safety measures provided to tourists in Maldives.
He tweeted on Tuesday, noting that more than 100,000 tourists from the United Kingdom visited the Maldives in 2018.
"I had the pleasure of thanking Tourism Minister Waheed for the unfailing support and assistance we get from the MNDF Coast Guard and from the Police Service when people on holiday get into trouble", he stated.
The ambassador's remarks came in the wake of several incidents where tourists drowned this month, and fires broke out in two resorts.
In relation to these incidents, Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed announced his decision to inspect services provided by resorts, on January 17. The ministry is also working to amend regulations pertaining to various sectors of the tourism industry.
