Maldives has secured funds to upgrade its weather observation systems to meet international standards.
The government of Maldives today signed a USD 1.5 million aid agreement to upgrade Maldives' weather observation system to meet international standards.
The agreement, which was signed by Maldives' Ministry of Environment, provides aid via the Systematic Observation Financing Facility (SOFF) in collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme.
With this agreement, Maldives signed to receive USD 1.5 million which is to be used to ensure the country's weather observation system meets the requirements of the Global Basic Observation Network.
The Environment Ministry revealed that these funds will be directed to upgrade the weather observation systems in the four existing meteorological offices in the country, as well as to develop an additional office at Noonu atoll's Maafaru Airport.
The aid will also be used to repair the Upper Air Radiosonde System in Addu City, the ministry added. It was also further highlighted that during this time, some equipment required for the calibration of instruments will be procured and facilitated with the assistance of regional countries.
