The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) is probing the death of an inmate who was under the care of prison authorities.

Hamzath Ahmed Fathuhy, 38, died after suffering a stroke last Wednesday and was brought to capital city Malé later that night.

He was serving a 25-year jail sentence on drug charges.

An HRCM official revealed that the commission is probing into the death of Hamzath as it is their duty to probe all inmate deaths.

According to a local media outlet, the father of the deceased, Ahmed Fathuhy stated that his son was brought to state-owned Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) only five hours after he was first taken to a doctor at Maafushi Prison. Fathuhy declared that his son died as a result of being denied treatment.

Hamzath’s death makes him the tenth prisoner to die under state care in the past two years.
