The plot of land adjacent to Hulhumale' Prison has been temporarily granted to Maldives Correctional Service for their use.

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan said in a post on X last night that an agreement has been reached with Male' City Council, HDC and Correctional Service to grant this land until construction of the Central Prison is completed and all the prisons are transferred there.

The land granted to Corrections is the plot between the prison and Hulhumale' Cemetery.

Ihusan said that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's aim is to decrease the cost of running prisons, and to increase the standard of service, thereby bringing a permanent solution to current issues faced.

In an interview with Mihaaru News last July, Ihusan said that a Central Jail is to be built on Uthuru Thila Falhu, after which all other prisons are to be shut down.

At the time, Ihusan said that the prison in Uthuru Thila Falhu will have the capacity to accommodate 3000 inmates. Despite this, the Minister said then that he hopes that many people will not need to be incarcerated at a time, and said he believes that with the setting up of a proper correctional facility, it is important to work towards reintegrating convicts into society.
