Maldives Immigration, on Saturday, announced the implementation of a more thorough vetting process for applicants seeking business and special visas.
According to Immigration's circular, the process may take longer than the routine processing time of 48 hrs, urging visitors to not travel to the country without obtaining a pre-approved visa.
Maldives tightened its border security in response to the terrorist bombings that occurred in multiple locations in Sri Lanka.
Local media Mihaaru reported that, according to Immigration Controller Mohamed Ahmed Hussain, Immigration along with relevant authorities had further enhanced security following the attacks.
“Staying on alert is important after such dangerous attacks in a neighbouring country. Accordingly, we have enhanced security measures”, he said.
Additionally, Immigration is increasing screenings in a bid to tighten security.
Moreover, a special visa is being issued for religious scholars scheduled to visit the country during the month of Ramadan.
