Immigration has reported that illegal immigrants residing in the country has been expelled and deported back to their native residential countries, within which expatriates with invalid visas and criminal records were included.
Maldives Immigration has stated on Wednesday that 870 expatriates who had taken residence in the country through illegal means have been repatriated or deported back to their native countries since the present administration assumed office.
Immigration stated that a special task force has been formed by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology as a fresh incentive to resolve illegal immigration into the country and under the instructions of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, end the neglectful conduct of former governments that refrained from implementing actions against illegal immigrants
During the press conference held by Homeland Ministry on Tuesday, Controller General of Immigration, Mohamed Shamman Waheed reported that the illegal residence of 817 expatriates were inspected and expelled out of the country. While 527 of these expatriates were repatriated under the Reintegration Operation, 290 foreigners were deported.
Within the expatriates taken action against amid this operation, Shamman revealed that there were individuals devoid of a valid visa alongside individuals with criminal records, in which included theft, drug issues and participation in prostitution businesses as well.
Shamman affirmed that such operations will be launched in the future as well.
Immigration ascertained that 22 operations to identify illegal immigrants were commenced in the past while another 15 joints operation were also conducted in collaboration with the Maldives Police Force.
Maldives Immigration had assured that specialized joint operations conducted with State Agencies will be expanded in the near future in order to resolve the residence of illegal immigrants in the country.
