Kuwait has extended a loan of USD 9.8 million (KWD 3 million) to Maldives for the establishment of hospitals and developing of health services in smaller islands in the nation.

The loan, equivalent to MVR 151 million, has been given through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED).

The agreement for the 'Small Islands Hospital Project' was signed by KFAED's Acting Director General Waleed al-Bahar and Minister of Finance Dr Mohamed Shafeeq at a ceremony held yesterday.

Minister of Health Dr Abdulla Khaleel also attended this ceremony.

The ministry said that they aim to provide and develop health services needed in small islands in the northern and southern regions of Maldives.

Once the project is completed, the costs of travelling between islands for healthcare will reduce, decentralized medical services will be provided for the residents and tourists in islands, and secondary health care will be available where necessary, they said.

The development of these hospitals include construction of the structures, electro-technical work, provision of health appliances, as well as furniture, planning and drawings, preparation of bid documents, engineering services to oversee construction, and establishment of units to implement the project.
