Rasheed clinches victory in the 'Muleekolhu Raalhugandu' event

Ismail Rasheed (Smiley) has emerged the champion of the 'Muleekolhu Raalhugandu' event of Maldives Surf League 2024, defeating Yoosuf Kayan Hamdhan Zaki with a 2 point difference.

Ismail Rasheed (Smiley) has emerged the champion of the 'Muleekolhu Raalhugandu' event of the Maldives Surf League 2024.

Competing with Yoosuf Kayan Hamdhan Zaki, aged 14 in the final heat yesterday, Rasheed claimed victory with a 2 point difference.

Both surfers had rode three total waves in the finals with Rasheed accumulating 13 points during his last two waves which earned him 7.50 and 5.50 points. Kayan had collected 11 points from his first two waves which earned him scores of 2.33 and 8.67 points.

This marks the first instance where Rasheed is crowned the champion at Muli. The surfer had forfeited the most recent tournament held in Muli last year and crashed out during the fourth round in the preceding year. This year additionally marks the first instance of Rasheed securing any triumph following his victory in the Kalhegalekodaa tournament held in Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo in 2022.

Rasheed had stockpiled a total of 12.37 points against Najaah Mohamed (Kabo) in the semifinals while Najah had scored 11.50 points. Najah was crowned champion in the first event of the Dhivehi Surf League this year, Kalhegalekodaa.

Meanwhile, the quarterfinals observed Rasheed clinch 11.10 points against Inan Abdul Hannan, who had scored 7.90 points.

Kayan Zakee had advanced to the semifinals after defeating two former national champions. He had scored 8.10 points against Hoodh Ahmed (Hoobz), triumphing the semifinal heat with a 2.93 difference. Meanwhile, the quarterfinals observed Kayan succeed against Ismail Miglal (Kuda Isse) with 13 points while Ismail had collected 9.67 points.

Rasheed had secured a spot in the semifinals of the Kalhegalekoda tournament as well. The former champion, Najaah had crashed out in the semifinal heat of the tournament begun in Meemu atoll Muli on July 24. Accumulating a total of 1,730 points, Najaah and Rasheed presently sits at the top of the Dhivehi Surf League ranking.

Two more events are arranged for the league this year with the Randhaa Raalhugandu event scheduled from August 27 through 30 at Kaafu atoll Thulusdhoo while the concluding event of this Surfing League, 'Rannamaari Challenge' is set to be held in the Male' City Raalhugandu area from October 27 through November 2.

The Asian Surfing Championships will take place at Thulhusdhoo before the league events resume, from August 17 to 24.
