Body Building Association of Maldives announced their decision to host the Asian Body Building and Physique Championship in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll.
Following the success of the bid to host the 2020 games in the country, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof tweeted last June, thanking the president and exco of Body Building Association for their work at the 53rd electoral congress of the Asian Bodybuilding Federation held in Batam, Indonesia.
Addressing the congress, the Secretary-General of the Maldivian Bodybuilding Association mentioned that it was their long-awaited dream to host the games in the country and that the best care will be taken into making sure that the games be as perfect as possible.
The Body Building and Physique Championship is organized by the Asia Bodybuilding Federation, which is also a member of the Olympic Council of Asia. The president of the Federation, Datuk Paul Chua expressed his pleasure in the Maldivian government’s role in the process of winning the bid and said that it is indicative of the event’s impending success. He further mentioned that, in light of the tourism sector in the country, he expects that the promotion of the competition will be near perfect.
Maldives previously hosted the 2011 competition in Bandos. The decision to host the event in Maafushi is on par with the current administration's plans to host such international events outside the capital and in different corners of the country. The under-21 South Asian Badminton Championship is also to be held in Addu Atoll in the coming month.
