Maldives women's relay team breaks record at Commonwealth Games

The women's national relay team competing at the ongoing Commonwealth Games at Birmingham, United Kingdom sets a new national record in 4 x 100 meters relay category.

The team consisting of athletes Mariyam Alha, Aishath Himna Hassan, Rifa Mohamed and Aminath Layana managed to break the previous record by completing the event under 49.19 seconds.

The previous record in the 4 x 100 meters category was held by a team which included Alha, Himna, Rifa along with local athlete Sara Massood. The team had set the previous record during the 2019 South Asian Games by completing the event under 50.16 seconds.

The team in 2019 had broken another previous record set at the 2016 South Asian Games, from a team that consisted of local athletes Afa Ismail, Aminath Nazra, Shamha Ahmed and Mirfath Ahmed. The team had finished the event under 51.32 seconds.

The women's sprinter team managed a sixth rank win at the first heat of the 4 x 100 meters relay at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The team qualified for the follow-up event by completing the first heat under 43.66 seconds.

Jamaica landed first place with its team completing the heat under 44.45 seconds, India managed second place with 45.39 seconds while Scotland grabbed third spot.

The female relay team, mostly consists athletes who competed at the 2019 South Asian games with the exception of Layana, who is replacing Sara Massood.

Layana, originally hailing from Gaaf Alif Dhaandhoo had previously won first place at 100, 200 and 400 meter inter-school competition at her home island. She managed to set inter-school records in all three categories she competed in.

Meanwhile, Himna, from the female relay team had broken a 21 year old national record in the 100 meter event at the Commonwealth Games. The previous record was set by Shamha at the 2001 World Championship in which she finished under 12.27 seconds.

Himna managed to set the new record by finishing the event under 12.17 seconds.
