The Criminal Court on Tuesday added three days to the remand of the bus driver, who was involved in a freak accident that claimed the life of a tourist in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale' early Monday.

The driver, who reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, inadvertently ran over a 31-year-old Ukranian tourist near the newly opened local market in Hulhumale' at 0630 hours.

The police are currently investigating the case.

The licensed driver is an employee of state-owned Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the company responsible for providing public transportation routes within the suburb.

According to local media, the MTCC bus was en route to the ferry terminal when the conductor realised that the driver was not rounding the corner near the new local market. Reportedly the dozing bus driver was startled when the conductor reached for him and accidentally hit the accelerator.

The bus veered out of control, towards the Ukranian woman who was out on a morning stroll with a local woman.

MTCC has shared that the company is currently extending assistance to the family of the deceased.

None of the passengers aboard the bus were hurt in the accident.
