The ruling Maldives Democratic Party's National Council has voted to postpone the election of Chairperson with the support of 100 out of the 115 members who attended

Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail who is running for MDP chairperson proposed to postpone the elections which was passed by a margin of 85 votes.

Although Fayyaz proposed for the election to be postponed due the fasting month of Ramadan, North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi) who is also running for this post disagrees. He says that the election must be held by the scheduled date or earlier.

Fayyaz's supporters proposed holding the elections on May 14. The date was passed with the vote of 100 out of the 115 members present at the sitting. Fifteen members did not vote.

Most of the MPs who spoke last night spoke in support of Fayyaz's proposal to postpone the elections. However, the members in favor of Inthi said that they were trying to postpone the elections to gather more support for Fayyaz. The two sides became involved in a verbal altercation.

Fayyaz said that he stands with the government and that the People's Majlis was harassing the leadership. He said that sacrifices for the party was not made by a singular group and no one can claim that he is a thief.

A decision on the date of the election had to be made by the National council due to both sides being unable to come to an agreement on the matter. Hulhumale' MP Ali Niyaz who chaired the meeting concluded with the statement that efforts had been taken to ensure that this matter did not escalate which was unsuccessful.
