Parliament has scheduled a sitting for tonight to vote on the dismissal of Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem.

Shameem was summoned to today's meeting of the Judiciary Committee where he was given the opportunity to be answerable to allegations raised against him in Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid's motion to dismiss the PG.

A member of the committee later confirmed to Mihaaru that the committee had decided on approving the dismissal of the PG.

The Parliament sitting to vote on Shameem's dismissal is scheduled for 21:00 hrs tonight, with Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim at the end of today's sitting that the last sitting of this session will be held tonight.

The agenda for tonight's sitting has not been published yet. However, the removal of the PG is the only work in progress at the Parliament at present.

Shameem has denied all allegations raised against him, saying that they hold no water and has already been addressed previously. He said that he would have handed in resignation even if it had simply been requested of him, rather than parliament raising what he said are baseless allegations.

He said that the parliament would not have had to waste its time if they had previously read the reports, writings and essays published by the PG Office.
