Maldives Airports Company Limited's Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed has assured today that the current economic difficulties being faced by the Maldives will not affect the development of the new terminal of Velana International Airport.

In a press conference held today, Shareef said that financing for the project has already been secured, and as such the project would not be adversely affected by the economic situation.

"The enhancement of services at MACL will not face any setbacks," he assured.

MACL has earlier said that the new terminal will have three aero bridges and can cater to 3.7 million passengers. The terminal is scheduled for opening in November, with the entire project due for completion by late next year.

USD 100 million (MVR 1.5 billion) has been sourced from Saudi Fund for Development, with another USD 80 million (MVR 1.2 billion) sourced from Abu Dhabi fund for Development to expedite the project. In total, the cost of the development reaches MVR 7 billion (USD 454 million).

Once the new terminal is completed, it will have the capacity to cater to 7.5 million passengers. It will also open up 1,800 new jobs, as well as allow for more airlines to operate.
