Health Protection Agency (HPA) has warned the public to remain cautious of disease spreading and take preventative measures amidst the current bad weather and flooding in parts of the Maldives.

The statement by HPA said that spread of diseases is likely to increase due to flooding, junctions overflowing, sewage discharge and rainwater retention.

As such, diseases such as diarrhoea, vomiting, illnesses spread via cat and rat faeces, fungal respiratory infections and mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika may be on the rise.

HPA's advice:

- Do not step into flood water

- Use waterproof materials if needed to enter flood water

- Individuals working on flood drainage and disinfection must follow HPA guidelines

- Wash hands frequently with soap and water

- Use boiled rainwater or bottled water for drinking and cooking

- Empty vessels or areas in homes and yards which may retain water

HPA also urges the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any symptoms of diseases.
