An additional arrest has been made in relation to the attack on Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem.

A Police Media Official confirmed that a 22 year old Maldivian male has been placed under arrest on Friday in relation to the case. The Criminal Court ruled yesterday that he will be remanded in custody until the end of the trail.

Two others were arrested earlier in this same case and placed in custodial remand until end of trial on February 2. These two individuals are Midhhath Adam, 23, of Riveli, Raa Atoll Alifushi, and Mohamed Jazlan, 22, of Javaahiru Villa, Thundi, Laa Atoll Gan. The address in Male' for both of these individuals listed in the court order is H. Fenigehlidhaage.

Shameem was attacked in front of his home near Noor Mosque on Wednesday morning while he was returning home after dropping his child off at school late last month.

The attackers are believed to have attempted to hit Shameem on the head with a hammer, however Shameem managed to take defensive action, resulting in him sustaining injuries to his left forearm instead.

In a press conference held following the incident and subsequent arrests, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau said that the attack on the PG was premeditated and well planned in a manner attempting to conceal the identities of those involved.

In light of similar attacks in the past, police said that it is likely that there are additional individuals involved behind the attack besides the two assailants.

The Commissioner asserted that the police services will not allow space for such attacks to be committed in the country, and that the case is being investigated as a high priority matter.
