Noonu Atoll Velidhoo Council has stated that the damages caused in Saturday's fire at the island's Waste Management Centre is estimated to cost nearly MVR 3 million.

Fire broke out at the Waste Management Centre at around 12:30 hrs on Saturday.

Authorities managed to put out the fire after many hours, at about 17:00 hrs on Saturday. At this point, the building was damaged beyond use.

In a statement released by the Velidhoo Council, they stated that the fire is believed to have started from an electricity shortage that occurred at the area where the waste material is kept.

However, the Council said that they are conducting investigations together with relevant authorities to ascertain the specific reason for the incident.

"In this incident, a large part of the centre itself, machinery being used in the centre, as well as a drag brush machine being used for the football turf grounds have been damaged beyond use," the Council said.

The Council estimates that the total value of the damage caused by the fire will amount to MVR 3 million.

The Waste Management Centre was established on a 13000 sqft land plot in 2022 on the northern side of Velidhoo Island.
