Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has last night extended the deadline for setting expatriate related fees to the end of August.

On July 24, the Ministry had disclosed a list of companies that had failed to pay due expatriate fees such as work permits and quota fees. They announced then that the overdue payments and subsequent fines must be settled before August 12.

On August 15, the Ministry announced that only 20 companies had settled the overdue payments by then. They added that some companies had made large payments within the duration, although they still had outstanding dues. Hence, they remained on the 'black list' category.

In an announcement last night, the Ministry said that the deadline for repayment has now been extended till August 31. However, they warned that strict action will be taken against companies that still fail to comply.

Such companies will be suspended from using the expat system from September 1, meaning they will not be able to receive any services provided through the expat system from then onwards.

It is through the expat system that the government provides all expatriate related services, such as issuance of work permits and work visas.

Homeland Security Ministry stated earlier that the names of the companies disclosed on the July 24th list are those who have overdue payments and fines exceeding MVR 100,000.

The Ministry earlier said that 1026 companies have unpaid fees of MVR 636 million. The list includes major businesses well renowned in the country as well.

Of these, 123 companies owe more than a million each to the State. Some companies had stacked up over MVR 26 million in dues.

Within three weeks of publicizing this list, the Ministry recovered MVR 182,954,572 in overdue payments.

Details of overdue fees

Work permit fee - MVR 573,840,450

Quota fee - MVR 96,559,286

Cancellation fines - MVR 2,144,000
