In efforts to address the space constraints faced by the Criminal Court, some of its hearings are to be held at the Civil Court division located in Hulhumale' from today onwards.

The Criminal Court has been facing difficulties in carrying out its work in its current premises due to the building been rundown and in a state of disrepair, with water leakages around the building.

In a post on social media X on Saturday night, the Criminal Court announced that it has received three court rooms from the Hulhumale' Civil Court premises to carry out trials. Therefore, the court said, court hearings of six separate sections will be held at these premises henceforth.

With the three new court rooms, the Criminal Court now has a total of six halls in operation.

"While it has been decided that hearings will be carried out in these six halls between the 11 judges under a schedule, priority will be given to conclude trials of persons who have remained in custody pending trial for older cases," the Court said.

In the past one and a half years, the Criminal Court carried out its hearings in only a single court room. The judges had a schedule they followed, wherein each judge had an allocated day for the use of the court room.

The Court said that during this period, remand hearings were held for 2934 persons, 2193 different court orders were issued, and 520 cases were concluded.
