Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has reduced the pickup fee charged for waste disposal in Male' region to MVR 500 and stopped charging gate fees for vehicles entering waste disposal stations, which initially stood at MVR 150.

The initial fee charged for household waste disposal was MVR 750.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had previously announced the government's decision to reduce the fee taken for waste disposal services on April 1.
An announcement by WAMCO stated that the tipping fee charged for each ton of waste delivered to transfer stations by individuals and small businesses and businesses offering waste transport services has been reduced to MVR 500.
WAMCO further added that the gate fee of MVR 150 taken from each vehicle that enter their transfer stations has also been revoked effective from the day of the announcement.
WAMCO added that the fees charged for weighting waste at the transfer stations has also been suspended until a weighing system or weigh bridge is established.
Male' was trashed with items discarded from households prior to the month of Ramadan. The escalating issue of large discarded items on various roads prompted Male' City Council to make numerous efforts to resolve the problem in collaboration with WAMCO and Maldives Police Service.
However, the issue remained unresolved and the council had since begun circulating photos on social media of individuals disposing waste onto the streets. Over 180 people have been fined so far for waste disposal on streets.
