The Elections Commission (EC) has fined three political parties for failing to submit audit reports within the deadline stated by law.
The parties include former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb's Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD), North Maafannu MP Mohamed Nazim's Maldives National Party (MNP), and former President Mohamed Nasheed's The Democrats.
In a post on X, EC announced that each of the three parties has been fined MVR 50,000.
According to the Political Parties Act, a party's annual accounts must be audited by an auditor approved by the Auditor General within three months after the end of each year and submitted to both the EC and the Auditor General.
The EC has the authority to fine parties between MVR 20,000 and MVR 50,000 for failing to maintain their annual statements or submit financial reports to the commission.
