The Elections Commission (EC) filed a lawsuit against Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) last week to collect the fines imposed on the party.
EC Vice President Ahmed Akram confirmed that the lawsuit was filed at the Civil Court.
The electoral watchdog levied an undisclosed fine on DRP over its failure to submit the party's annual and audit reports for three years.
Akram noted that the fine comprised of various penalties imposed on DRP on multiple occasions.
Due to the fines and warnings already issued previously, the EC had decided last June to host a meeting with DRP's senior officials to determine what action to take against the party.
As per the Political Parties Act, failure to submit a party's audit report carries a fine between MVR 20,000 and MVR 50,000.
DRP was founded by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Following the rise of conflicting opinions among its leadership, Gayoom and several senior members had left the party, which at the time faced financial difficulties with several payments owed to various entities.
The party is presently led by parliamentary representative for Kaafu Atoll's Kaashidhoo constituency, MP Abdulla Jabir.
