Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has announced today that the Sea Plane Terminal is going to be relocated to Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort.

In a press conference held today, Saeed said that transforming the current Sea Plane Terminal to a Jet Terminal, and relocating seaplane operations to Full Moon Resort is the most feasible course of action at present.

He said that the decision had been made in consideration of utilizing the maximum space available for airport development, and to ensure the swift operation of the entire service.

"We do not have an official Jet Terminal. Hence, the President's thinking is, to create a jet terminal and commence that new sector of trade officially. Along with that, the airport's capacity has to be broadened," Saeed explained.

Saeed said that as Maldives' has the largest seaplane fleet in the world, ease of operations in landing and take off at the main airport can be provided through relocating the service to a different island.

He revealed that the area where the Sea Plane Terminal is currently operated will be reclaimed, and used to expand the Domestic Terminal.

Saeed said that the current sea plane terminal is at about full capacity at present.

The current Seaplane Terminal, called 'Noovilu', was opened in 2022, the production of which cost USD 55 million. Currently, the terminal serves between 4000 to 6000 passengers daily.

During low season, around 300 sea plane flights are operated, with the number rising to near 600 in the high demand season.

Saeed said that in developing countries, airports development projects are never entirely completed. Instead, airport development is an ongoing project which will see more and more advancements with time.

He said that the airport services will continue to be expanded as the Maldives sees more and more development.
