Banks to continue three-day operation next week

Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) on Thursday revealed that due to the government's decision to keep all institutions closed for an additional week, the authority along with all banks, will once again only be open for three days in the coming week.

As per the announcement, banking services will be available on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 0900hrs till 1230hrs. Meanwhile, the central bank will accept and issue coins from 0930hrs to 1100hrs.

MMA will accept correspondences from the public and institutions that do not use Government e-Letter Management System (GEMS) via their email, [email protected]

This will mark the fourth week all government offices are closes over COVID-19 concerns. During the first two weeks, banking services were available only on two days. However, in the third week, it was increased to three.

In order to contain the spread of COVID-19 within the community, a three-hour daily curfew has been imposed by the state in the greater Male' region and also banned being in public groups of more than three people.

These measures are declared under the rights afforded to the Health Protection Agency under the state of Public Health Emergency that was announced on March 12

Maldives presently records a total of 19 confirmed and six active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 13 recoveries. While there are four confirmed cases of Maldivians, no local to local transmissions have been recorded.

The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected over 1.5 million people and claimed over 88,965 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 332,989 people have recovered.
