Maldives Media Council (MMC), on Tuesday, hosted the annual Maldives Journalism Awards 2019.
MMC gave away awards in the categories of Society, Politics, Sports, Feature, Judiciary and Law, Business and Economy, and Photography.
Nominated for a total of five categories, local media outlet Mihaaru bagged awards in four categories:
- Judiciary and Law (Print and Online Newspaper): Muizzu Ibrahim
- Sports (Print and Online Newspaper): Mohamed Hamdhoon
- Feature (Print and Online Newspaper): Mohamed Hamdhoon
- Photography: Nishan Ali
- Politics (Print and Online Newspaper): Mohamed Wisham from Avas Online
- Environment and sustainable development (Print and Online Newspaper): Eeman Anwar from Avas Online
- Business and Economy (Broadcasting Media): Simaaha Naseem from Raajje TV
- Business and Economy (Print and Online Newspaper): Mohamed Afrah from Avas Online
- Society, History and Culture (Print and Online Newspaper): Shafna Hussain from Sun Media Group
- Feature (Broadcasting Media): Shurfa Mohamed from VTV
- Investigative Journalism (Print and Online Newspaper): Mohamed Muzayyin Nazim from the Sun Media Group
The recipient of the newly introduced investigative journalism category, Sun Online journalist Muzayyin also secured the most promising journalist award for 2019.
During the ceremony, MMC also presented a commemorative award to the family of journalist Ahmed Rilwan who went missing on August 8, 2014.
MMC launched the Journalism Awards in 2013, in recognition of the efforts of local journalists, reporters and media outlets. Historically, the journalists of then-'Haveeru' and currently Mihaaru have taken home most of the awards.
