Inmate found dead in Maafushi Prison

An inmate at Maafushi Prison was found dead yesterday.

Maldives Correctional Service identified the deceased as Ibrahim Shamveel, 23, Four Flower, S. Maradhoo.

Shamveel was found hanged in his cell at around 4:20 pm yesterday.

He was immediately taken to Maafushi Hospital upon discovery, but was declared dead by doctors at the hospital at 4:55 pm.

Shamveel was serving a prison sentence of 1 year and 6 months for threatening a person's life.

Shamveel's family, Police, Inspector of Correctional Service, Human Rights Commission of Maldives and National Integrity Commission were immediately notified of the death, Correctional Service said.
