FIFA's Independent Ethics Committee has decided to provisionally suspend Football Association of Maldives (FAM) President Bassam Adeel Jaleel from taking part in all football-related activity at both national and international levels for a period of nine months in accordance with article 86 of the FIFA Code of Ethics (FCE).

The decision was taken following an investigation and subsequent request by the investigatory chamber in connection with proceedings initiated by the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO).

This led to a search of FAM House on October 22, 2023, following allegations of money laundering, embezzlement, and corruption involving the use of FIFA funds by top FAM officials.

Based on the information and documentation gathered during the preliminary stage of the investigations, the chairperson of the investigatory chamber concluded that, under article 62 of the FCE, there was sufficient evidence to initiate formal investigation against Bassam for potential violations of FCE.

Bassam has been notified of his suspension which comes into force today.
