Parliamentary representative for Naifaru constituency Ahmed Shiyam, on Monday, submitted a motion demanding the disclosure of details pertaining to the agreement with India to develop a Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard harbour at Sifvaru.

Shiyam attributed the decision to submit the motion to the fact the agreement was finalised without parliamentary approval.

Furthermore Shiyam added that the Maldivian government had turned down a similar proposal by the Indian government to establish a harbour at Sifvaru during Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom's presidency, due to certain concerns with the agreement terms.

In addition to demanding the disclosure of details regarding the harbour project, the motion also called for the government to release all information regarding loan arrangements finalised with India. It was highlighted that India accounted for the majority of the USD 6.45 billion taken in loans as of November 2020.

A total of 51 parliamentarians voted in favour of accepting the motion.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group leader and Henveiru Central MP Ali Azim protested against the submission of the motion, asserting that the High Court had previously issued a verdict stating that the disclosure of such agreements was not mandatory.

However, Parliament Speaker and former president Mohamed Nasheed asserted that Shiyam's motion fulfilled all necessary requirements.
