President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Wednesday met with the Minister of External Affairs of India Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, at the President's Office.
President Solih warmly welcomed the Minister and congratulated him on his appointment. He also expressed gratitude for the work done during Dr Jaishankar's former capacity as Foreign Secretary to strengthen the relations between both the countries.
During the meeting, President Solih also expressed condolences on the passing of the Minister's predecessor Sushma Swaraj.
Both diplomats discussed multiple areas in which Maldives and India could cooperate bilaterally. Some of these areas include encompassing socio-economic development, trade, security and regional governance. These areas have been facilitated by the numerous agreements signed by President Solih since taking office in September.
The parties noted that the ongoing 4th Edition of the Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) at Paradise Island Resort provided an opportunity to explore new avenues for further engagement.
Minister Jaishankar thanked President Solih and expressed similar sentiments over maintaining the relations between Maldives and India. He highlighted the significance of dignitaries from across the Indian Ocean Region attending the ongoing IOC, rather than from just South Asian countries.
According to him, this emphasizes the region’s increasing global importance.
The meeting concluded with President Solih relaying his best wishes to President of India Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and wished good fortune to the people of India.
