The decision by Maldives Bar Council to set an "entry" fee of MVR10,000 for the bar exam has attracted heavy scrutiny and lambaste from both students and attorneys.

Prominent advocate and a member of the council, Mr. Maumoon Hameed made the confirmation through a message sent to a Zoom Conference channel created for local law students and attorneys with temporary practicing licenses.

Furthermore, the message from Mr. Hameed attempted to explain that the fee covers administrative expenses and the formulation of the exam structure.

On top of this, Mr. Hameed further claimed that the actual entry fee is MVR20,000 after factoring in all expenses, which has been sliced in half after the decision was made that the council will bear half of the fee for each participating student.

The decision was not welcomed by the local lawyers fraternity who had chimed about the hefty sum being excessive.

"How are we supposed to pay this? By taking another loan? Or should we let our studies go down the drain cause we cannot pay the fee?", one of the participants in the Zoom Conference sent the chat message.

Meanwhile, advocates with temporary licenses have bemoaned the "cut-throat" nature of the legal field in the Maldives, noting that "getting work" was no longer easy due to the saturated and competitive nature.
