Bank of Maldives (BML), on Thursday, announced the successful completion of a waste management system project Kinolhas, Raa Atoll under 'Aharenge Bank' Community Fund.

Overall, the project aimed to serve as a step towards establishing a well-rounded waste management system and enables the collection, sorting and clearing of waste generated in public spaces.

Although the Kinolhas Council already facilitates the collection of household waste on a daily basis, managing waste management for public spaces was a challenge due to the lack of recycle bins and proper sorting system in such areas.

Submitted by island resident Wafir Ahmed, the project supported efforts to place bins in five areas of the island which were allocated for the disposal of different waste types.

"Dustbins are placed in harbor area and main public spaces with a proper way to sort and manage the waste. It is convenient to manage waste and has made a difference to the islands overall cleanliness. A huge thanks to everyone who played an important role to assist the completion of this project. My sincere thanks to BML for the opportunity as well. I hope that the community of Kinolhas extends their support to keep the island clean as part of our vision", stated Wafir.

Community Fund is a program intended to empower individuals and NGOs to contribute to their communities through sustainable projects. BML recently opened applications for the first phase of the Community Fund initiative for 2021.
