Jumhoori Party leader emphasizes the importance of granting approval to all cabinet ministers, criticizing the opposition's decision to not do so.
Jumhoori Party (JP) Leader and Maamigili constituency MP Gasim Ibrahim has said that it is pointless to go to the public seeking votes in the parliamentary election if the current MPs refuse to grant parliamentary approval to the cabinet of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who was elected through the votes of the majority of citizens.
Opposition party The Democrats have announced today that they will be not be voting in favour of granting parliamentary approval to some cabinet ministers. Parliamentary majority party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is currently in a parliamentary group (PG) meeting to come to a final decision on the matter.
Speaking at today's extraordinary sitting of the parliament, The Democrats PG leader MP Ali Azim stated that it is difficult to grant approval to all the cabinet ministers.
JP Leader Gasim responded, criticizing this statement. He said that loyalty to the citizens can be shown through granting parliamentary approval to all the cabinet ministers. Then, if any issues arise in the future, to summon them and question them in parliament.
He described the withholding of approval to cabinet ministers as disrespectful to the citizen's decision in electing the government, adding that it is vital to grant them approval in light of national interest.
"Parliament needs to grant approval to all ministers today. Unless you do so, if you instead decide to disregard the people's decision, there is no need for your parties to go to the public tomorrow, seeking votes," Gasim said.
Gasim said that any efforts to refuse approval to the ministers would prove detrimental to the country's well being, and that it would be done with self interest at its core.
Voting on the matter is scheduled for 13:30 hrs in today's parliamentary sitting.
