Bangladesh’s High Commissioner for Maldives said on Monday that the Maldivian government was working to regularize over 34,000 undocumented Bangladeshi workers in Maldives.
According to Bangladesh's media reports, the Maldivian government is working to regularize undocumented Bangladeshi workers under a program initiated by Amnesty International.
Sohail Parvez, First Secretary of Bangladesh's High Commission in Maldives, said they were providing assistance in various ways to speed up the acquisition of documents the workers may need.
Once the documents are received, workers will be able to access health insurance and other benefits, besides remitting funds to Bangladesh through the banking system, he said.
He said they were working to ensure the expatriate workers in Maldives receive their passports soon.
Around 45,000 undocumented Bangladeshi nationals were registered in the Maldives in 2019. Around 11,000 of them had been regularized by May this year, according to the Economic Ministry.
The program to regularize undocumented Bangladeshi workers was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Parvez said the resumed program was now being carried out at a rapid pace.
Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, during her official visit to Maldives in December 2021, discussed the regularization of undocumented Bangladeshi nationals in the nation.
