Asra Naseem, Ex-wife of Majilis Member Ahmed Easa has requested to cancel the hearing scheduled against him for domestic abuse he inflicted on her.
This case was reported to the Police in May by Asra herself, when they were still married. She later asked to cancel the investigation as well. However due to the nature of the case the Police continued the investigation of MP Easa, representative of the Kendhikulhudhoo constituency. Easa's court hearing is scheduled for 11:00 am tomorrow morning.
Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) confirmed on Saturday that they have received a letter from Asra. Although they have confirmed she requested for the hearing to be cancelled it is still unclear why she wants it to not proceed.
If Easa is found guilty of the domestic abuse allegations aimed at him in court, he would face a maximum jail sentence of two months and 12 days.
PGO had requested for a court order to arrest Easa previously for fear he may influence witness statements. However, Criminal Court refused to issue the court order due to legal obstacles.
There was public outcry demanding Easa resign from Majilis when the accusations against him was made public. While he did not resign as a Majilis Representative, he did quit as the Chairperson of the Majilis Social Issues Committee.
