On Sunday, a rare sunfish was caught by local fishers near Baa atoll Fulhadhoo.
According to the Fulhadhoo Island Council President Ali Zuhair, the extraordinarily big fish measured approximately 6-feet.
“It looked bigger than 6-feet,” Zuhair told Mihaaru. “I don’t know how much it weighed, or what the fishermen did to it afterwards. But it was fishermen from this island that caught it,” he added.
Sunfish are not a protected species in the Maldives. The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) said that there have been no more than 10 sunfish caught in the Maldives thus far that they are aware of.
The awkwardly shaped sunfish, or common mola mola, are found in tropical and temperate waters. It is one of the largest bony fish in the ocean, and can weigh between 200 – 1000 kilograms and grow up to 13-feet.
