The government has announced plans to launch a wind energy pilot project in Noonu atoll Manadhoo.

Ministry of Finance, in a statement on Monday, invited bids for the installation of the wind renewable energy pilot system under the Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded Assured Project. Interested parties are asked to participate by submitting their proposals.

The project will follow a public open tender procedure combined with ADB's "single stage two envelope" process.

To register for the bidding process, a non refundable registration fee of MVR 1,500 or USD 100 is required. The bids will be officially opened on February 10, 2025, at 13:00 hrs at the National Tender Conference Hall in the Ministry of Finance.

There had been earlier efforts to explore wind energy in Maldives. In 2007, a Singapore-based company, DLRE, had initiated wind energy pilot project on three islands.

Under the project, a wind farm was constructed in Haa Alifu atoll Uligan on January 7, 2008, but the project, along with similar initiatives in Meemu atoll Raiymandhoo and Gaafu Alifu atoll Kondey, was discontinued.

The current government aims to achieve 33 percent of the country's energy production from renewable sources by 2028.
