The safe belonging to the Island Council of Kendhoo, Baa Atoll, was stolen on Tuesday along with a considerable amount of cash.
According to Kendhoo Island Council's Vice President Ahmed Abdul Rasheed, they were only made aware of the missing safe upon opening the council office on Wednesday morning. Additionally, he stated that the safe was stolen after breaking the locks of the council's main gate as well the lock of the room where the safe was kept.
Furthermore, Ahmed stated that the safe contained an amount of MVR 188,925 at the time of the robbery, and that the money was a sum accumulated from several donations made to the council.
Ahmed also stated that the money was scheduled to be taken to Eydhafushi to be deposited, along with all the necessary documents.
Council's leader Shahuma Khalid revealed the lack of a 24-hour security guard as well as the lack of security cameras on the premises of the island council. She further revealed previous requests made to install security cameras in the council. However, the council's budget could not cover the expense, she said.
The island council highlighted that the local police have begun investigation regarding the stolen safe.
