Environment Protection Agency (EPA) on Thursday levied a fine of MVR 600,000 on state utilities company, Fenaka Corporation, over installing engines in five islands without prior authorisation.

EIA fined Fenaka for placing engines in the islands of Thakandhoo in Haa Alif Atoll, Finey in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Henbadhoo and Maalhendhoo in Noonu Atoll, and Kendhoo in Baa Atoll, without conducting environmental impact assessments (EIA), over the past two years.

The agency ordered Fenaka to settle the penalty within a period of one month.

Fenaka stated that it shared details of the five projects with EPA early this year.

According to EPA, Fenaka conceded to installing the engines without conducting EIAs, in January.

EPA also levied MVR 100,000 fines on Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, and Male' Water and Sewerage Company last year, over illegally drawing up ground water in capital Male' City.
