President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that an airport will be developed in Mathiveri following the reclamation of the island's lagoon.
During a meeting with island residents, the President highlighted the importance of the airport for the Mathiveri constituency, highlighting that the atoll relies on tourism.
“The first of the new projects to be launched next year will be the airport on this island [Mathiveri],” he said.
Mathiveri MP Hassan Zareer noted that the airport has long been a dream for the island’s residents. During a meeting with the island council, the President assured them that the lagoon would be reclaimed to facilitate the airport's development.
President Muizzu said that in line with promises made during the election campaign, all projects would be implemented within the next two years. He said that some projects had been delayed this year due to the budget passed by the previous government but assured the public that 2025 and 2026 would focus on fulfilling these commitments.
