Azima Shakoor secures PPM/PNC's Malé mayoral ticket unopposed

Former Attorney General Azima Shakoor has been granted the PPM/PNC ticket to run for the position of Malé City Mayor in the absence of a rival.

The Progressive Party of Maldives/ People's National Congress (PPM/PNC) coalition has decided to award the ticket contest the Mayor's post to former Attorney General Azima Shakoor without conducting a primary in the absence of a rival.

According to the coalition, Azima was the sole candidate who submitted their nomination for the Mayor's post.

After filing the nomination and expressing her intentions, Azima stated that her candidacy for the Mayor's post is driven by a commitment to continuing her service to the people of the country. She emphasized the importance of electing a mayor who can collaborate effectively with the government.

Azima emphasized the significance of bringing in someone knowledgeable and capable of working harmoniously with the government. If elected, she pledged to uphold the vision of the former Mayor and current President, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The seat for Malé City Mayor became vacant when Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned to assume the presidency on November 17. In addition to the Mayor's position, vacancies in constituencies, including Maafannu South, Medhu Henveiru, and Henveiru Dhekunu, have been announced.

The Elections Commission has decided to conduct by-elections to elect members for these seats on January 13, 2024.

Former MTCC CEO Adam Azim has been nominated by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to contest or the Mayoral seat. Current city councilor Mohammed Saaif Fathih and former Police Commissioner Hussain Waheed have also expressed interest in the post.
